Peter P. Tortora, 88, Of Yorktown, Retired Lakeland Educator

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Peter P. Tortora, a Yorktown Heights resident, died on Thursday, Dec. 17. He was 88. 

Tortora was born in 1927 to Paul and Emma Tortora. He graduated from North Tarrytown High School in 1946 and earned a bachelor's degree from New York University and a master's degree from Columbia Teachers College. 

He served in the Army/Air Force from 1946-48 and the U.S. Air Force from 1950-52. He was part of Special Services entertaining the troops. 

Tortora worked as chairman of the fine arts department in Lakeland School District before retiring in 1983. He was head of adult education program for 10 years following his retirement. 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosemarie; daughters Sharon (William) DeRosso, Debra (Bart) DeRosso, JoAnne, and son Peter (Siobhan) Tortora; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. 

Calling hours are from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, at Clark Funeral Home in Yorktown Heights. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
