Walter Edgar Stein, Former Yorktown Resident, 85

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Walter Edgar Stein, a former resident of Yorktown, died after a battle with lung cancer on Saturday, Nov. 22. He was 85.

He was born in Pittsburgh in 1929 to Charles and Stella Stein. 

After attending Duquesne University, he went on to have a successful career as an executive for General Electric Credit Corp. in Stamford and Norwalk, Conn., until 1984. Years following in the same capacity he led many changes with PFSS, and Meritor Corp. in Philadelphia, retiring after 35 years of service. 

In 1988, Stein and Irene, his wife, retired to MacCumber Terrace, where he was president of the Homeowners Association and led 4th of July parades as Uncle Sam, as he had previously in Brentwood, Pa. 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Irene Stein; his children Carol and husband Ronnie Gardner of Rocky Point, N.C., Diane Stein and Alan Schrager of Rye, Craig Stein and wife Susan of Sherman, Conn., and Gail and husband Brian Workman of Houston; and five grandchildren. 

He was predeceased by his sisters Marion Maxwell, Winifred Hoffman and brother, Charles Stein Jr. 

He was a member of the St. Therese Catholic Church and assisted with the landscaping there.

 A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at St. Therese Catholic Church, 209 S. Lumina Drive, Wrightsville Beach, N.C.
