YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- The Yorktown Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Send letters to yorktown@dailyvoice.com.

As a taxpayer, I have questions about how properties are assessed in Yorktown, when a single-family structure has been renovated to an exclusively commercial, profit-making business.

I’m asking all the board members to explain to the taxpayers why two very similar, side-by-side commercial buildings are assessed differently

The 366 Underhill Ave. Coldwell Banker property is assessed at $20,000 as a commercial property. Its 2015 total tax bill is $26,759.49. The 360 Underhill Ave. Grace building property which houses over five business tenants is assessed as a residence at only $13,500. The total 2015 tax bill is $18,264.93. This is $8,494.56 less than its smaller neighbor.

It should be noted the Grace parcel is almost three times the size of the Coldwell parcel and the square footage of the structure of the Grace building appears to be much larger. It also should be noted there appears to be numerous conflicts/omissions on the assessor’s property card for the Grace building that might be improperly lowering the property's true assessed value.

Do the storage of heavy duty construction equipment and a construction company operating directly across the street from our picturesque town hall and down the block from the proposed new town square comply with the current zoning codes? Why have no violations ever been issued if they do not?

My questions, which should be answered prior to the election, are: Why are the Grace building and the Coldwell Banker building assessed so differently? Why are there so many omissions and inaccurate notations on the town documents concerning the Grace building?
