To the editor:

An issue raised in the recent town elections is the civility of the board. How can proper decorum be achieved. To solve a problem the first step is to fully understand its cause. For me the answer seems obvious it is Patel and Siegel that have perfected the art of sowing discord.

Even a quick look at their campaign literature makes this clear. Siegel in typical fashion campaigns nit-picking and sifting her opponents’ records for anything she can turn into criticism. Who does she think she is to give Councilman Diana a “report card.” As expected the unofficial town’s “school marm” gives Councilman Diana all Fs. Siegel gets an A plus for having the uncanny ability of finding the smallest of specks in everyone else’s eye and never acknowledging the plank in her own.

The constant spew of criticism over the smallest of perceived miscues is not the way to engender constructive collaboration with your colleges on the board.

Siegel can sift out a gnat while she swallows a cow. For her there is no big vision. She lives peeking in the weeds.

The challenge viz-a-viz Siegel is to identify any positive contribution. Pointing out flaws does not count! Remember her tenure as supervisor was defined by contentiousness and litigation.

As to Patel his present behavior is baffling. How can constructive dialogue be achieved by sticking one’s fingers in their ears, hiding behind curtains (ironically because someone is taking his picture), storming out of meetings, inappropriately gesturing, referring to the supervisor as a jerk, claiming budgets he voted for are dishonest and constantly spewing innuendo of wrongdoing. It is kind to say he is simply an embarrassment.

Patel and Siegel don’t tell us what they have done nor what they hope to achieve. I for one will not be voting for the party of vapid stone throwers.

Douglas B. Ofner

Editor’s note: Vishnu Patel is the Democratic town councilman seeking to unseat incumbent Republican Supervisor Michael Grace. Susan Siegel is the Democratic councilwoman running for a full four-year term on the Town Board. And Tom Diana is the Republican councilman running for re-election.
