The preliminary investigation appears to clear a 29-year-old driver from New York City of any wrongdoing, the Sheriff's Office said in a press statement.
The fatal crash occurred on State Route 22 near State Route 343 in the Town of Amenia at about 8:30 a.m.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 dispatch of a car-pedestrian crash, and upon arrival they discovered Theodore Miles Jr. lying in the northbound lane of Route 22 with serious injuries. Miles was transported to Sharon Hospital in Connecticut, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that a Toyota Camry driven by Lei Qu, 29, of New York City was traveling northbound on Route 22 near Route 343 when it "encountered Mr. Miles in the roadway," the Sheriff's Office said in a press statement. "Mr. Miles was then struck by the vehicle after the operator unsuccessfully attempted to avoid him."
The investigation is continuing to make a final determination on the causes, the Sheriff's Office said, "However, at this time the primary factor appears to be the actions of Mr. Miles and no charges have been filed against Mr. Qu."
The investigation is continuing by members of the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation Unit.
