Brewster Man Slashes Victim's Neck In Assault, Police Say

BREWSTER, N.Y. -- New York State Police from the Brewster barracks have charged a 25-year-old resident of Brewster with assault and other offenses following an incident in which a man was slashed in the neck with a knife, authorities said.

The arrest came about when State Police and the Village of Brewster Police Department responded to assist EMS at the Brewster Fire Department with an alleged assault on Friday, police report.

Putnam County 911 reported that the victim arrived at the fire house seeking medical assistance after he had been cut with a knife by a male acquaintance, according to officials.

An investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as John K. Schoenfelder Jr., cut the victim’s neck with a knife, police report.

The victim was treated for a laceration to his neck that was deemed to be non-life-threatening, according to officials.

Schoenfelder was located on North Main Street by responding police agencies, and placed in custody, police report.

He has been charged with assault in the second degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree, both class D felonies, along with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a class A misdemeanor, according to officials.

The defendant was arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, police report.

He was scheduled to appear in the Village of Brewster Court on Monday, according to officials.

The State Police were assisted by the Village of Brewster Police Department and the MTA Police.
