Champion surrendered to authorities on July 20, the same day the Criminal Court of the Village of Buchanan issued a warrant for his arrest on alleged animal cruelty charges.
The SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) Unit responded to a call on June 9 from Buchanan officials, who reported that seven puppies, some injured, were being kept in small crates and unable to sit down at Champion’s residence onAlbany Post Rd., Buchanan.
HLE Director Ernest Lungaro transferred the dogs to SPCA of Westchester where they were examined. Upon examination, it was determined that Red, a five-month-old Dogue de Bordeaux mix had a fractured front leg. Orthopedic surgeons failed to re-set the leg and were forced to amputate.
Red’s siblings were treated for skin conditions and one had an abscess on its face.
“It is hard to imagine the pain and suffering that this puppy endured, prior to being rescued” said SPCA of Westchester Executive Director Shannon Laukhuf in a statement. “If he had received medical treatment in a timely manner, his leg may have been saved. I’m grateful to our HLE Unit for the time and effort they gave to pursuing this case. Seven beautiful puppies have been given a second chance at a happy life.”
