An article published this week by Gannett Newspapers focused on 14 lawmakers convicted of crimes who are still receiving $531,000 in pension payments.
Assembly Bill 4643 has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Governmental Operations for further action.
"For too long Albany politicians have taken advantage of the public trust and cashed in on it, and this report shows it," Katz said.
"We need to act on this constitutional amendment this week, and we need to put an end to abuses of power having no consequences. The Albany culture of corruption exists because of a lack of true penalties for illegal actions. This is an ethics reform we need to ensure a more transparent and accountable government. Let's get this done for the people of New York."
