Man In Jail After Being Caught With Illegal Loaded Handgun In Route 6 Stop

A traffic stop on Route 6 in Putnam County resulted in a 21-year-old man now finding himself behind bars after being caught in possession of an illegal loaded handgun, state police from the Brewster barracks said on Friday.

Troopers stopped the motorist for vehicle and traffic violations at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21 on Route 6 in Southeast. They then detected the presence of marijuana, and further investigation discovered the handgun, according to police.

Alfredo S. Mendoza of Kearny, CT,  was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (a Class C felony), criminal possession of a firearm (a Class E felony) and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Mendoza was arraigned before the Town of Southeast Justice Court and remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail and $5,000 bond. Mendoza is next scheduled to appear before the court on Monday, Nov. 27.
