Parolee Apprehended After Attempting To Steal $1.1K At ShopRite In Carmel

CARMEL, N.Y. – A parolee from Poughkeepsie was arrested on grand larceny charges after allegedly attempting to steal over $1,100 of merchandise from the Carmel Shop Rite supermarket on Dec. 10.

Thomas J. McNulty, 48, was arrested by deputy sheriffs after a foot chase that started in the supermarket's parking lot and ended near Manchester Road.

The incident started when an employee of the supermarket confronted McNulty in the parking lot and ended when he was spotted at the Sunoco station on Dykeman Road and apprehended by deputies.

He was identified by Shop Rite employees as the man putting stolen merchandise into a vehicle belonging to a friend. Deputies also recovered merchandise taken from the Acme Supermarket in Mahopac. 

The officers determined that McNulty was wanted by the state Division of Parole for a parole violation. 

McNulty was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny and remanded to Putnam County Jail. He also faces another grand larceny charge for the merchandise taken from the Mahopac supermarket.
