Police confirmed that, Daniel Vargas, 29, of the Bronx, was caught trying to break into the building over the weekend, injuring a police sergeant in a scuffle while trying to flee officials.

Sgt. Paul D’Onofrio was the officer injured while apprehending Vargas. He suffered injuries to his groin muscle, knee and hand and was treated at White Plains Hospital.

Tuckahoe Police Lt. Ray Stabile confirmed that Vargas is being further investigated to determine if there is any connection to last month’s break-ins. He added that it seems likely the incidents are linked. Police are working in coordination with police in Mount Vernon, Yorktown and Rockland County to determine if Vargas had a hand in similar break-ins in those municipalities.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday, Vargas was found attempting to break-in to the CubeSmart building when he was spotted by D’Onofrio. He shoved the sergeant and fled before D’Onofrio and his backup, Sgt. Chris Santiago apprehended him after a brief chase.

A screwdriver and rubber gloves were recovered from the suspect. Vargas is facing multiple charges of assault, attempted burglary, criminal possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest. He is being held without bail in Westchester County Jail.
