Officers from the Yorktown Police Department received a report at approximately 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning from staff at the George Washington Elementary School, where there were reports of a broken window.
Investigators from both the department and school reviewed surveillance video, police said, and determined that a 12-year-old - who was known to police - broke a window to the school and made several attempts to unlawfully enter the building while it was closed. No motive has been determined.
According to police, the investigators recognized the suspect, and responded to a nearby residence on Lexington Avenue, where they spoke with the 12-year-old in front of his mother.
The 12-year-old was arrested and charged with juvenile delinquency, though police noted if an adult had committed the same crime, it would have carried charges that include attempted burglary and criminal mischief, both felonies.
The suspect - whose name will not be released due to his age - was issued an appearance ticket to appear at the Westchester County Department of Probation with his mother on April 18. He was then left into the custody of his mother.
