Police: Peekskill Man Falsified Abduction Report

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – A Peekskill man has been charged with lying to Yorktown police about an Oct. 17 incident in which it was reported that he had been abducted from the Jefferson Valley Mall.

Robert Jeter, 26, was charged with filing a false statement, a misdemeanor. Police said an investigation revealed "inconsistencies with the report."

Jeter reportedly called his sister on the afternoon of Oct. 17 and said he was being followed by two people in the mall parking lot, police said. The sister told police that Jeter had been receiving threatening text messages for about a week.

Jeter's car was found in a truck loading dock at the mall and the location and condition of the vehicle initially led police to believe that foul play was involved, authorities said.

Jeter was found later that day at his home with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he voluntarily went to police headquarters and admitted that his statement was not true.

Jeter was released without bail and is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m.
