The scam mailing states that select Westchester residents have won $3 million, included with a check for $6,000 with directions to deposit it at the bank immediately, according to an alert by the Tuckahoe Police Department.

Police said that once the check is deposited, the “winners” are instructed to call the fake company. The scammers then ask for that cash to be withdrawn, with several thousand dollars sent to the fake company for “processing, attorney and shipping costs” in order to receive the $3 million.

According to police, the fraudulent check they proceed to send will bounce a few days later and any money given to the fake company will be lost. A copy of the letter can be seen above.

“Do not be fooled,” police said in a statement announcing the scam. “Disregard any mail you receive regarding this scam or anything similar.”
