In a defamation lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court, Adam Levy claimed that Putnam Sheriff Donald Smith and others had smeared him by saying he had interfered with a criminal case involving his live-in trainer, Alexandru Hossu, lohud.com reported.

Levy recused his office from prosecuting the case and Hossu, a Romania immigrant who had been accused of sexually assaulting an adolescent, was acquitted in 2014, according to media reports and Levy’s lawyer, Michael Sussman.

In June, a state Supreme Court judge ordered Smith and sheriff's Capt. William McNamara to testify specifically about what may have been reported to the FBI about the Levy-Hossu connection, the lohud.com report said.

An agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement has already testified in the defamation case, the lohud.com story said.

Levy ran for re-election last year, but lost. He is the son of Judith Sheindlin, television's "Judge Judy."
