YORKTOWN, N.Y. - With an assist from the community, a suspect has been tracked down and arrested in connection with an alleged Shrub Oak attempted home burglary earlier this week, police said.

On Friday afternoon, following a brief, but extensive investigation, police announced that they arrested 28-year-old suspect who is expected to be charged with attempted burglary and for multiple larcenies of parked vehicles in the area .

According to police, the suspect was arrested at his temporary residence on Spillway Road in Shrub Oak on Friday afternoon.

On Thursday morning, police stated that a Pine Court resident in Shrub Oak reported that a suspect was attempting to illegally and unsuccessfully enter a home between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The suspect was later also implicated in connection to several vehicle larcenies on nearby Sunnyside Street.

The suspect failed to gain access to either home, according to investigators. He first attempted entry through a rear sliding glass door before attempting to enter through a lower, rear slider door, using a shovel that was left outside by the homeowner in an attempt to pry the door open.

The suspect ran from the property when an alarm was triggered. Police subsequently interviewed neighbors, who reportedly witnessed a suspect in his late teens or early 20s walking from the scene. No threats of harm were made, and no injuries were reported.

Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble praised his department, investigators and the community, who provided an initial description of the suspect and provided home surveillance video that helped apprehend the suspect. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“Several Yorktown Police Department Officers assisted in the investigation, sharing their knowledge of potential suspects who reside in the immediate area,” he said in a statement. “A job very well done by all. Thank you to the Westchester County Department of Public Safety for their initial Aviation and K-9 assistance, and a big thank you to residents and business owners who took the time to share their respective video surveillance.

“Neighbors helping neighbors helps the Yorktown Police.”
