A spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff's Department identified the driver as Fabiano R. Olveira of Cortlandt Manor.
Olveira was driving alone in his 2007 Mazda sedan on Oscawana Lake Road in Putnam Valley when he swerved to avoid a deer crossing the road, according to Sheriff's Capt. William J. McNamara.
According to the accident report, Olveira denied any injury and did not require medical attention.
Olveira reportedly lost control of his car, crossed the road, struck an earthen embankment off the shoulder of the southbound lane, and careened back across the road before coming to a stop in the northbound lane, McNamara said. No tickets were issued.
The crash could be heard a half-mile away. At least 50 volunteer firefighters responded.
A Dunderberg Road resident said he and his daughter heard the car roll over. The driver was climbing out of the upside-down car when they got to the scene. He appeared uninjured, they said.
"He said he saw a deer and swerved,'' the man said, declining to give his name. "He was totally coherent. It was fortunate."
