Police responded to a report of an unattended dog left in a vehicle in the Sears parking lot at 600 Lee Blvd. on Saturday, May 28, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officials report.
Officers located a small shih tzu inside a parked, unattended vehicle, according to police.
The air temperature was 92 degrees, and the heat index was 105 degrees, officials report.
The officers found the dog without water, panting heavily and wearing a dog sweater, according to police.
Police were able to enter the vehicle, remove the dog and place it in an air conditioned police vehicle; it was subsequently transported to Yorktown Police Headquarters, where it was given food and water, officials report.
Officers were later able to locate the dog’s owner, identified as Maribel Flores-Susano, who appeared at Police Headquarters, according to officials.
Flores-Susano was charged with leaving an unattended dog confined in a motor vehicle, a town code violation, according to officials.
She was issued an appearance ticket at Police Headquarters and is scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Tuesday, June 14, police report.
