On Wednesday, Yonkers Det. Lt. Patrick McCormack announced that Floyd Bruce, 19, has been charged on a multi-felony indictment for the shooting incident that sent his 4-year-old victim to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Shortly after 5:15 on Saturday, July 16, Bruce produced a handgun and shot several rounds into a crowd of people on Willow Street, a block from Columbus Park. The intended victim - an 18-year-old man in the crowd - was grazed on the ankle, while another struck the girl in her leg while she walked with her mother.
The shooting launched an intensive investigation by the Yonkers Police Department’s Detective Division, which included multiple witness interviews, the evaluation of local surveillance cameras and the collection of forensic evidence that included .22 caliber shell casings that were left at the scene.
Following the investigation, detectives identified Bruce as their main suspect.
Less than two weeks later, on Tuesday, July 26, two suspects were placed under arrest for an unrelated robbery of a Palisade Avenue victim, one of which was Bruce. At the time of his arrest, Bruce was in possession of a .22 caliber handgun.
For his role in the robbery, Bruce has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree robbery. On Tuesday, the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office in Yonkers filed additional charges that include second-degree assault in relation to the shooting of the 4-year-old.
“This case was particularly disturbing, because the shooter acted with complete disregard for our residents, including children who were in the immediate area,” Police Commissioner Charles Gardner stated. “We are going to work very hard to make sure this suspect is held fully accountable for his reckless actions.
“This should be a warning to those who choose to engage in violent activities, that we will find you, arrest you and hold you responsible.”
