The effort, sponsored by the Alliance for Safe Kids, was part of a local, federally funded study to combat underage drinking. According to police, all 12 of the establishments checked refused to sell alcoholic beverages to the underage agent.

The following Yorktown businesses were checked and did not sell alcohol to the underage agent:

Commerce Street Gulf, Suburan Wine, Jefferson Valley Lanes, Shrub Oak Getty, Deccios Market, Lakeland Liquors, Shell Shrub Oak, Hess Mart, Shell Crompond Road, Parkside Wine and Liquor, Chestnut Mobile and Rt. 6 Mobile Mohegan.

Police Chief Daniel McMahon reports that these compliance checks are made possible through a Drug-Free Communities grant that was awarded to the Alliance for Safe Kids through Westchester County Stop DWI program. McMahon reports that these random, unannounced compliance checks will continue.
