Police say an officer responded to the store on Bank Road to investigate a shoplifting complaint. While enroute to the store, the defendant was identified and seen walking along Route 6 near the store, according to police.

Police say Cahan was confronted by an officer and fled on foot into a wooded area. Cahan was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit in the rear of the Toys 'R' Us store, according to police. Police say Cahan is accused of stealing $283.43 worth of merchandise from the store.

Cahan was arraigned before Town Justice Judge Gary Raniolo and released on $500 bail. Cahan is scheduled to appear in court on the charges on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
