Katz (R, C, I), representing New York’s 94th assembly district, which includes most of Putnam County and some of northern Westchester County, has served in the state legislature since 2011.

Katz's decision to not seek a fourth term was first revealed on Tuesday in a New York Times profile of state legislators holding second jobs.

“I’m living the dream right now,” Katz, who owns a veterinary hospital in the Bronx, told the Times. “And then I come back to the nightmare of Albany.”

Katz's office has since confirmed his decision through a press release.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to be your representative up in Albany for the past six years," Katz said in the statement. "However, I have come to the heartfelt conclusion that [it] is time for me to step down from the legislature at the end of my term."

"I am not a career politician; I am a citizen-legislator. I ran to make a change in my community," the statement continued. "I am staying true to my word and will term limit myself out and set an example for the other members to follow."

Katz, who lives in the Lake Mohegan hamlet of Yorktown, said he plans to devote more time to the Colorado-based company he founded called Therabis, which sells cannabis-based medical treatments for animals.

"I had intended for this all to be done in Putnam County," Katz said about his company, claiming it was no longer possible "since New York remains 50th in desirability to start a business."

Katz accepted a plea deal in April 2013 to dismiss a marijuana possession charge.

New York's 94th assembly district spans the towns of Patterson, Putnam Valley, Carmel, Mahopac, and Southeast in Putnam County as well as Somers and Yorktown in Westchester County.
