Elected in a special election Tuesday to fill two vacant board seats, Republicans Diana and Bernard will join the town board when the results are certified.

"It feels good," Bernard said of the election. "We're looking to work together to get things done. There's been so much dysfunction over the last two years, we want to work in a positive manner."

Bernard said he would like to see more economic development in Yorktown.

"We want to revitalize the hamlets and see those storefronts filled," Bernard said. "We need to make Yorktown a more business friendly town and encourage businesses to flourish."

With Republicans holding a 3-2 majority, Bernard thinks the bickering and dysfunction on the town board. He said the election was a validation of Supervisor Michael Grace's agenda.

"He had an aggressive agenda and moved things along," Bernard said. "Then some of his issues got stalled, but I think voters want to move them forward."

While he was campaigning, Bernard said instead of hearing about taxes and roads, voters were complaining about the rancor on the town board.

"It's just an embarrassment what's going on," Bernard said. "I want to stop the animosity and try to work with everyone."

Diana said he would like to focus on the heroin problem that has become an epidemic in Yorktown. A citizens task force has been formed, working with Senator Terrence Murphy.

"We're doing it though conversation, education and enforcement," Diana said. "This is for our youth. They are our future. They are dying from this terrible epidemic. I'm going to try ad combat this and reverse it."

Like Bernard, Diana said he wants to bring in more businesses to Yorktown, to ease the tax burden from residents. He said Costco will be a major advantage for Yorktown.

"We need to open Yorktown for business, but do it properly," Diana said. "Like our motto, progress with preservation."

Diana said his only agenda is to work for the people of Yorktown.

"This isn't the town of Tom, it's the town of Yorktown," Diana said. "It's everybody's town. Everybody deserves the right to have a great town."
