A notice was sent out last Thursday that the garbage schedule in Yorktown would not change for the week despite the holiday. Monday recycling, however, was pushed to Tuesday; and Tuesday recycling was pushed to Wednesday. Thursday and Friday recycling will be picked up as normal.
Council member Nick Bianco said residents probably assumed since Monday was a holiday, garbage pick-up would be pushed back to Tuesday.
"I guess some people weren't prepared," Bianco said. "We apologize that probably the notices that went out, some people didn't get them in time."
Supervisor Michael Grace said garbage isn't typically picked up on holidays because transfer stations and plants are closed. Competition Carting worked Presidents' Day, however, because those transfer stations and plants were open.
"They can't pick up the garbage if the plant is closed and the transfer station is closed. They can't pick up the garbage otherwise they're just holding onto it," Grace said. "I know there was confusion because I think [Executive Secretary] Mary Capoccia was upstairs, very busy with phone calls all day long. Some very irate people."
The board apologized for not getting the message out better but hoped no harm had been done as garbage will be picked up for those residents Thursday. The board also reminded residents to have garbage outside their homes by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up day.
