NY Senators Want Hearing On Barge Stationing Point In Montrose

A proposal to place 10 formal commercial anchorage sites along the Hudson River, including three in the Lower Hudson Valley at Stony Point, Montrose, and Yonkers has prompted the two New York Senators to call for a public hearing, lohud.com reported.

A public hearing is being requested of the U.S. Coast Guard by Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand over the anchorage sites, which are considered necessary for safe navigation up the river. The senators are joined by local officials and environmental advocacy groups like Riverkeeper, who harbor concerns of how the anchorage sites will impact security and the environment in the area, according to lohud.com.

The newspaper previously reported that the commercial ships are primarily carrying petroleum-based goods to Rhinebeck, where they would stop before the river narrows.

Despite the lateness of a request for such public hearings--June 30 was the deadline--Coast Guard officials told them there will be a chance for the public to weigh in at the next stage of the process, lohud.com reported.

Sept. 7 is the deadline to submit public comments.
