It is appropriating funds for the rejuvenation of its local narcotics unit in the 2014 budget, according to a press release. The move coincides with Hudson Valley's War on Heroin.

"This was not a negotiating point," said Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy in a press release. "Walking into the budget process last year I made it clear, unless there was funding allocated to revive our narcotics unit I would not be casting a vote. Now, we have an officer on the verge of completing the necessary training to help us combat this devastating drug epidemic."

Murphy has been a leading voice in the Hudson Valley's War on Heroin, according to the release. Murphy recently teamed up with the New York State Senate's Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction, which included "narcan training for first responders," according to the release.

"Narcan is the miracle drug law enforcement officers and first responders administer to reverse heroin overdoses," representatives said in the release.

Murphy, a former volunteer EMT, participated in the training and was certified, according to the release.

"Working with our police department we recognized the drug epidemic was a serious problem that needed to be addressed," said Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace. "Reviving our local narcotics unit will allow us to partner with law enforcement agencies on the county level to educate the young people in our community and more aggressively combat the distribution of illegal drugs on our streets."
