YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- The Yorktown Town Board's recent resolution supporting County Executive Rob Astorino's veto of the Immigrant Protection Act has Democrats upset.

The Republican-majority board voted 4-1, along party lines, on Sept. 5 to express its support for the veto. Astorino, who recently issued an executive order on immigration , said the Immigration Protect Act would turn Westchester into a sanctuary county. The County Board of Legislators will be voting on whether to override the veto on Monday.

"We are..a nation of laws and it is simply absurd to provide sanctuary to dangerous criminals who are here illegally," Supervisor Michael Grace said. "I applaud County Executive Astorino's courage and leadership in protecting the constitution."

Democrats Vishnu Patel, who is on the town board and voted against the measure, Alice Roker, who is running for town board and Ilan Gilbert, who is running for supervisor said the resolution was "ethically and ethnically challenged," in a letter.

" It is a slick political trick designed to divert attention from the very serious shortcomings of the town board majority," the letter said. "The resolution is completely utterly and totally gratuitous. It's without legal purpose. It is not legislation. It does not enact or repeal any law."

Democrats also cried foul about the resolution being passed at the end of the meeting and when it was not originally on the agenda, calling it wrong and cowardly.

Matt Slater, chairman of the Yorktown Republicans said the Democrats want to roll out the red carpet for criminal illegal aliens and turn Yorktown into a sanctuary town.

"We instead are focused on moving Yorktown forward and giving everyone an equal opportunity to succeed regardless of where they came from or who their parents were," Slater said.
