YORKTOWN, N.Y. A possible dog park location at Granite Knolls Park was described as "perfect" by Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace but is being called anything but that by some local residents.
Its a magnificent spot, but it just doesnt accommodate the size of a park that we need for the dogs, said David Rocco, president of Yorktown Community Dog Park. I just hope that we can get back to the table and look for another location.
Specifically, the park would take the place of the old barn on Stoney Street, which the board is looking to tear down. Rocco was hoping for a larger space to be split into two sections for small and large dogs.
Grace asked Rocco to wait until the barn is taken down to assess the space. He said the dog park might not be relegated to just the barn area, and the property across the street next to Phoenix House could also be included in the final plans.
I think between the entire piece theres lot of opportunities up there, Grace said. The thing that you have to think about at your end is, its tight economic times right now. So were trying to use what we do have, rather than going out and trying to create new resources.
Stoney Street resident Gene Carroll called the area a local speed trap and said building a dog park there would be dangerous. He asked the board to carry out a traffic study.
The entrance and exit to the proposed dog park is at the point where dangerous, speeding cars reach their top speed, Carroll said. The placement of the curb cuts is a clear danger to all who travel this road. Developing this property with perhaps as many as 20 parking spaces presents an ideal and enhanced opportunity for accidents.
The Town Board received three quotes ranging from $1,900 to $3,300 for asbestos abatement at the barn. The board also voted to award a bid at an estimated cost of $14,862 for roll-off containers for debris during the demolition. Grace said the job will likely be done by the towns Highway Department, but the final decision would be made by the board at a later date.
