Yorktown Moves Along With Granite Knolls Barn Demoliton

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – A plan to demolish the Granite Knolls barn and revitalize the property is moving along after the Town Board agreed to award another bid last week.

“We voted to spend $6,200 to pull out the stumps, put in top soil, seed the field, put in drainage where the driveway comes in,” said council member Dave Paganelli.

The $6,200 comes out of a $25,000 line item the town set aside in the 2012 budget, according to council member Terrence Murphy. At the previous town board meeting, the board awarded a $1,900 bid for asbestos abatement and $14,862 for roll-off containers for debris during the demolition.

Town Supervisor Michael Grace has said the actual demolition of the building will likely be done by the town’s Highway Department, but the final decision would be made by the board at a later date.

Grace hopes to build a dog park on the Stoney Street property and said the space will be assessed further once the barn is torn down.

The dog park idea has been met with skepticism by some residents, including David Rocco, president of Yorktown Community Dog Park. Rocco believes the space is simply not big enough.

Grace asked Rocco to wait until the barn is taken down to assess the space. He said the dog park might not be relegated to just the barn area, and the property across the street next to Phoenix House could also be included in the final plans.
