The dome at 3000 Navajo Road would be 330 feet long, 222 feet wide and 186 feet high at its peak height, according to attorney Al Capellini, who represents the complex’s owners. He compared the proposal to the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Ulster County, and said it is seasonal and would be taken down in the spring.
Capellini presented plans to the Yorktown Town Board Tuesday night, and the length of the approval process could all come down to semantics. Capellini said no site plan is needed and the dome should not be considered a “structure” because it is air-supported.
John Tegeder, Yorktown’s director of planning, disagreed with Capellini and said the size and structural integrity of the dome needs to be thoroughly reviewed. He said it is possible for air-supported domes to fail and collapse.
“It is a structure that can actually fail and injure someone,” Tegeder said. “You’ve got to understand you’re putting up a big structure and you’re going to have kids playing in there.”
The board agreed to get an opinion from the town’s attorney and refer the plans out to the Yorktown Planning Board.
“I would be remiss if I didn’t voice my safety concerns,” said council member Dave Paganelli.
Officials from the complex were hoping to have the dome up sooner than later, but council member Nick Bianco said planning policies are in place for a reason.
“This is only stage one of stage 10,” he said.
