YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Assemblyman Steve Katz (R,C - Yorktown) has signed on as a sponsor to Assembly Bill 0547, which prohibits sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school.
The Court of Appeals recently ruled that the only body capable of restricting the living quarters of a convicted sex offender was the state.
"As a state, and a community, we have to come together and insure that our children are safe in our schools," said Katz, whose district includes Yorktown, Somers, North Salem and parts of Putnam.
"This isn't a political issue; it's an issue of peace of mind. By preventing these offenders from living within 1,000 feet of school grounds, we will have largely provided that. Because of the court's ruling, this bill has to be passed and done so as soon as possible. We cannot afford to wait when dealing with the safety of our children."
