YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – One of the oldest homes in Yorktown Heights went on the market last month at 2594 Old Yorktown Road.

The Chesse House, which was built in 1740, stands on the corner of Route 202/35 and Route 32. The home has been owned by its current owners since 1986 and includes four bedrooms, 2.5  baths, front and rear porches and three additional structures along with the main house.

“There are so many things that stand out about this property,’’ said Elisa Bruno-Midili, who is listing the property for Judy Johnson Real Estate. “It’s the garden, the visibility, it’s location and it’s got historic significance.”

The house listed in mid July at $475,000. The exterior includes a brook that runs through the property an expansive lawn for family gatherings and a patio within “Judy’s Secret Garden,’’ an English style garden with neatly arranged plantings, shrubs and trees.

The east side of the house is the site of an early 18th century tavern and inn. It is believed a tunnel exists between the house and the nearby First Presbyterian Church, and was used during the Revolutionary War for smuggling attachments and soldiers from the church when a raid on the church was anticipated.

The interior contains numerous rooms with original wide pine flooring, bubble glass windows and 2,014 square feet on two stories. Its location is an easy walk to the bus, park and tennis courts.

“For people who love antiques and want a house in a prominent location, this is perfect,’’ Bruno-Midili said.

The house received the Heritage Preservation Award from the Yorktown Historical Society and has been featured in numerous publications. It is designated as a key historic site within the town.
