William Raveis Gets Running For Cancer Research

For the entire William Raveis Real Estate family, dealing with a cancer diagnosis doesn't require going it alone. From its executive leadership to agents across the region, many within the company -- like most Americans -- have felt the effects of the disease firsthand.

One such instance was with long time Farmington, Conn. agent, JoAnne Peck, who developed a fast-moving breast cancer in May 2016. Largely unable to work and suffering from intense physical and mental stress, Peck credits her Raveis family's constant outpouring of love and support as a key component in her healing process. "I was so welcomed when I got to go [into the office], that I almost felt like a celebrity,” said Peck, a mother of four.

Personally motivated in the fight against cancer, the brokerage currently partners with both support and scientific organizations. One of which is Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation, which works with scientists like Jason Crawford to develop unique approaches to cancer treatment.

Crawford is an assistant professor of Chemistry and Microbial Pathogenesis at Yale University and heads the school's Crawford Lab. The 38-year-old scientist and his team are currently working to understand the molecular mechanisms of cancer formation in an effort to prevent them from forming. "If you zoom all the way into the molecular level, you can start to understand diseases,” he said.

Taking an innovative approach and challenging the research norm has been possible largely through external aide from organizations such as Damon Runyon. “Support from William Raveis and Damon Runyon have been very helpful, because it has allowed us to take risks and pursue out-of-the-box ideas,” said Crawford. "It’s taking these kinds of risks, I believe, that will lead to big discoveries in the long run.”

To support scientists like Crawford, hundreds of participants partook in the third annual William Raveis Ride + Walk cancer research fundraiser at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk, Conn. To date, the Raveis event has raised more than $1.5 million dollars for grants that support treatment research. This year to date, the William Raveis Charitable Fund earned $375,000 to support the critical research.

“It is our privilege to support these innovative young scientists [like Crawford],” said Bill Raveis, founder and CEO of WIlliam Raveis Real Estate.
