Boces Tech Students Accepted at Fashion Institute

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Nearly half of the Fashion Design and Merchandising students graduating from the Tech Center at BOCES this year will be furthering their careers at the world-renowned Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan.

"We always have some students who are accepted at FIT, as well as other fashion programs. But this year, six of the eight students who applied to FIT were accepted and the remaining two were wait-listed, which is very impressive," said Lisa Tobin, a FIT graduate who teaches fashion design and merchandising at the Tech Center.

The six students from BOCES who have been accepted into FIT are Angelina Leone and Skye Golematis of Walter Panas High School; Sarah DeMattio and Edina Mehmedovic of Mahopac High School; Kaye Birch of Ossining High School; and Maya Goldberg of Horace Greeley High School.

Overall, 16 students are graduating this year from the Fashion Design and Merchandising program at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES. All of them except one are going to college to pursue a career in fashion.

According to the College Board, FIT, which boasts such graduates as Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera, accepts only 43 percent of the students who apply.
