YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Students at Brookside Elementary School traveled around the world Thursday without leaving their school.

Approximately 130 third-graders took part in a special day devoted to geography and learning about the more than 200 countries. The program started with an assembly led by children's author and illustrator Bob Conrad, who entertained the audience of children and adults while also providing useful information about the different continents.

Later in the day, students took part in workshops, some led by parent volunteers, who talked about their native countries. The fun-filled event ended with a treat, many treats to be exact, as students sampled an array of international desserts.

"Students get to see different countries and taste different countries," said Lisa Santosusso, a third-grade teacher, who coordinated the event with fellow teacher Sharon Debrino.

It was the first time the Around the World program was held at Brookside. For many years it took place at Crompond Elementary School.
