SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School students recently collected 2,946 food items for the Yorktown Food Pantry in a weeklong drive.

Items included cans, bags and boxes of food. The winning class was Mary Eickler's grade six home room. Grade six collected 1,780 items, grade eight gathered 675 items and grade seven garnered 491 items.

Student volunteers packed boxes of food for pickup during lunch period. School custodians then helped get the boxes from the classroom into the food pantry vehicle.

English teacher Janet Schwarz has been leading the food drive effort at the middle school for more than 25 years. Schwarz said she started the drive to do something for those in need.

"The students have learned there are people in the community who are less fortunate," she said.
