Levy was approved for retirement effective July 31 by Yorktown's Board of Education last week.
"This is a resignation that we accept with mixed emotion," said Superintendent Ralph Napolitano. "Because, on the one hand, we’re happy for Ken. He certainly deserves a retirement and he’s been looking forward to one. I know that there’s a part of him that’s very happy to do this. On the other side of it, I think we are already beginning to feel the absence of Mr. Levy. He has been a great asset to the district over these 11 years."
Levy has been with district since 2001, and Napolitano praised his ability to initiate curriculum changes and help consolidate elementary schools when French Hill closed in 2010.
"He’s never shied away from hard work," he said. "He’s never shied away from anything that made a difference to the children, and you could always count on him to work very, very hard. So he will clearly be missed."
Three Yorktown teachers will also retire effective July 1: Pamela Everitt, an elementary teacher at Brookside School who has been with the district since 1989; Laurie Kalinoski, a speech teacher at Mildred E. Strang Middle School who has been with the district since 1981; and Joanne Saldarelli, an elementary teacher at Mohansic School who has been with the district since 1992.
"These are absolutely wonderful people," Napolitano said. "Together, they’ve given 74 years of service to the district."
