The event celebrated the close connection between the village of Elmsford, the Elmsford Union Free School District and its community. Mayor Robert Williams spoke to the students about the importance of sustainability and Earth Day. The mayor even proclaimed the day, April 20, to be known as the Carl L. Dixson Primary School Day in Elmsford.

The tree, a Jefferson elm, was donated by the Elmsford PTA. PTA President Liz Aprile shared her insights into the symbolism of the tree and the connection to youths.

The event concluded with a schoolwide performance of an original song titled "The Dixson Elm," written by Carol Florio, school nurse.
