YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Existing security procedures and protocol at all Lakeland Central schools will be reviewed in light of last Friday's shootings in Newtown, Conn., said James VanDevelde, the district's director of communications.

"The district has a number of security procedures already in place," VanDevelde said. "These plans are reviewed annually and are currently being analyzed by the district safety committee."

Like many  districts, Lakeland uses a video/buzz-in system for visitors at its schools. Each building has only one point of entry.

The district has also been in contact with local police on a regular basis and met with Yorktown police on Tuesday.

"In addition to their patrols this week, we are working with them on an increased presence in our elementary schools," VanDevelde said. "We will also be meeting with other police and safety personnel regarding security in our buildings as well as bringing in outside representatives to review our building's safety."

Lakeland's two high schools and middle school are already monitored by full-time school resource officers, who are members of the Yorktown or Westchester County police departments.

"The safety of the children of Lakeland is our highest priority and we will be working in the coming weeks and months to do what we can to ensure their continued safety," VanDevelde said.
