Four candidates are running for three, three-year terms on the Lakeland Central School District’s Board of Education.
Incumbent member Carol Ann Dobson and school district residents Dr. Michael J. Cherchia, Mike Daly, and Karen Pressman will be on the ballot.
Current trustees James B. Carroll Jr. and Brian Hugick, whose terms expire at the end of June, are not running for re-election.
The proposed 2015-16 school operating budget is nearly $161.2 million, and is virtually the same as the approved 2014-15 academic year budget.
The proposed budget for the upcoming school year includes a district-wide tax levy increase of .5 percent, and is one of the lowest in the past 18 years, according to a recent budget newsletter published by Lakeland school officials.
The budget, if approved, will add security monitors to each of the district’s five elementary schools.
Also, the award-winning science research program at both high schools will have full-time rather than part-time staffing.
New part-time staff members for art, music, and world languages will be hired; this would restore those positions eliminated a few years ago due to budget constraints.
Increased state aid, lower retirement costs, some staff members retiring or moving on to other jobs, and better healthcare costs have contributed to the ability to add and restore jobs and services.
Voting will be 7 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Van Cortlandtville Elementary School, Route 6, Mohegan Lake. The school is across from Cortlandt Town Center.
