Lakeland's Education Foundation Grants Come Full Circle

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — Lakeland’s Education Foundation participates in a cycle—they accept donations throughout the year through different fundraisers, then give the money back to the community in the form of grants to staff at Lakeland’s schools.

At their fundraiser slated to take place this Sunday, the foundation will extend a thank you and honor those Lakeland staff members who have helped the foundation give back to the community.

Lakeland’s Education Foundation president, Denise Kness, said this year’s honorees are MaryEllen Herzog, assistant superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services, and Maria Jeffery, an seventh grade teacher at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School.

“They really have been huge supporters throughout the years with our events, whether they help us get auction prizes or sell raffle tickets, they really have been our go to people in the district,” Kness said.

The efforts of Kness, Herzog and Jeffries, as well as all the other Lakeland community members who have raised funds, has paid off—in last year the FFE gave back $46,000 in the form of grants to teachers, as well as one parent.

Kness said that highlights from the past year have been the opportunity to fund parts of projects like Rachel’s Challenge, purchasing bicycles at George Washington Elementary School, helping to fund the Van Cortlandtville garden and helping to fund the science research competition expenses.

Kness added that the foundation has also been able to support the Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School consumer technology class. This year, just like last year, students in the consumer technology class receive supplies from the foundation, and the class actually built different items to be auctioned at this year’s fundraiser.

“It’s really great because we can help them to make projects, and then they donate them back to be auctioned off and help us raise money, it shows a foundation like this really works and really comes full circle,” Kness said.

The Lakeland Education Foundation’s 19th annual Casino Night and Dinner Dance will be held at the Villa Barone in Mahopac on Saturday, March 10. For more information, visit their website here .
