“It was a true team effort from the community,” said Mahopac Middle School principal Vincent DiGrandi.
Students and staff members at several schools in the district held drives to collect goodies such as turkey, stuffing, potatoes, rolls and pies.
“You name it,” said Lynne Mongon, an administrative assistant at the middle school’s guidance office who helped coordinate the drive.
They also set up a “pantry” with staples such as flour, sugar, oil, vegetables and baby food where recipients could shop.
Firefighters and local businesses donated turkeys.
One local businessman donated 100 pounds of potatoes and several stores donated gift cards.
Drive participants at the Fulmar Road Elementary School collected things cranberry sauce, stuffing, paper towels, pasta and other necessities.
The folks at the Austin Road Elementary School collected money that was used to buy $125 grocery store gift cards for families in need.
Food was also collected at Mahopac High School, organizers said.
This annual event was organized by high school social workers Kristel Halton, Jenn Stytzer, Davia Bugge and Valerie Trefny.
Also helping out were school counselors, custodians, teachers, students, parents, clubs and administrators.
“Mahopac High School is committed to making community service a priority and promoting empathy and resiliency through acts of kindness,” said Halton, adding: “I feel very grateful to be part of a wonderful community.”
