MAHOPAC, N.Y. -  Mahopac Central Schools Superintendent Dennis Creedon announced he intends to leave his position at the end of the school year.

Creedon made his announcement at Thursday's Board of Education meeting. He will be completing a three-year contract that he signed in 2015.

At the meeting, Creedon cited the long hours and demanding work as for why he's stepping down and said he wants to start painting again, according to Mahopac News. He said he does not intend to leave education completely, he said.

Creedon started his contract at Mahopac on July 1, 2015, the first date of the 2015-16 school year. He succeeded Brian Monahan, who had been the district's interim superintendent.

Creedon had been a deputy chief academic officer in Philadelphia's school district. He holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, a master's degree from Goddard College and a bachelor's degree from Antioch University.

Creedon's time with Philadelphia's school district goes back to 1987 and included time as a teacher, director of arts education, a curriculum specialist and an assistant superintendent.
