“The consequences of missing too much school are severe,” Sanchez said. “They include falling behind academically and being at a higher risk for dropping out of high school. It’s up to all of us – parents, teachers, medical professionals, nonprofit groups, community members and others – to help keep our children on track.”
Sanchez and more than 200 other superintendents nationwide have committed to reducing chronic student absences, improving attendance by working with community partners and using attendance data to identify chronically absent children and then intervene.
The Ossining School District began its own attendance campaign last year, which includes social media messages and emails to parents. The plan identifies students who miss 10 percent or more school days and sets attendance goals for schools and principals.
