Six Yorktown Staff to Be Honored at Annual Excellence Fundraiser

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — In the biggest fundraiser the Yorktown Foundation for Excellence hosts every year, the foundation is not only raising funds to give back to teachers in the form of grants, but is specifically thanking members of the Yorktown School District who exemplify certain missions of the foundation.

The event, set to take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Tarrytown on Saturday, will honor one teacher from each school in the Yorktown district. Jane DeCoursey, the vice president of the foundation, said this year the current number of attendees will be 225, surpassing their own goals for attendance.

The six teachers being honored are Yorktown High School English teacher Pamela Chesser, Yorktown Alternative High School social studies teacher Michael Kovalyk, Mildred E. Strang Middle School guidance counselor Joanne Silverman, Crompond Intermediate School fifth-grade teacher Kathleen Muldoon, Brookside Kindergarten teacher Julia Brotko and Mohansic School speech therapist Sue Zuckerman.

DeCoursey explained that the foundation went to the schools, including to Superintendent Dr. Ralph Napolitano, to ask for recommendations of staff to recognize.

“We decided we wanted to honor character in education,” DeCoursey said. “There’s so much the schools are doing with character in education so we asked the principals and Dr. Napolitano if there were any teachers who stand out in their own building.”

DeCoursey said that while the dinner is their biggest fundraiser, they also have a wine tasting event, a 5K fun run in the spring and a rock the foundation event in the fall. Saturday’s fundraiser will also feature a silent auction from club fit memberships to ACT tutoring prep. Saturday night is meant to be a casino night and dinner dance.

Yorktown’s Foundation for Excellence fundraises throughout the year and then accepts applications for teachers wanting to bring something into their classroom. The money raised by the foundation is then given to the teachers in the form of a grant. For more information and tickets, click here .
