YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School got a taste of music and culture from South Africa Thursday as the acapella group Thula Sizwe performed.
The appearance of the 10-member group was made possible through Bridges of Hope, an international network of teachers, students and friends collaborating on creative arts in education projects that promote respect, understanding and communication.
Lorraine Cich, a music teacher for more than 25 years at Thomas Jefferson who also coordinates a student volunteer club called Helping Hands, said she was thrilled to have Thula Sizwe spend the day and take part in workshops and presentations with students at all grade levels.
"It makes them (students) wonder more about cultural diversity, caring for others and accepting people for who they are," Cich said.
Thula Sizwe had students and teachers clapping and grooving from their opening number "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which was written in 1939 but is more commonly known from the Disney movie “The Lion King.”
Thula Sizwe will be wrapping up their local schedule Friday evening at Grace Lutheran Church, located at the corner of Curry and Gomer streets. The concert is open to the public.
