Two Hen Hud, Somers HS Students Deliver Computers To Kids In Mount Vernon

MONTROSE, N.Y. -- Alec Feldman, a junior from Hendrick High School, Mitchell Feldman, a freshman from Hendrick Hudson High School and their cousin Aaron Feldman, from Somers High School, learned of a southern Westchester high school that needed computers, so they set out to remedy the situation.

The boys found that Nellie A. Thornton High School, in Mount Vernon, had about 700 students and only about a dozen computers for the entire student body. They found that with an average class size of 25 or more, the school was unable to have an entire class work on a project in the library, where the computer terminals are located. In November, the Feldmans delivered about two dozen working computers that they were able to obtain through outreach to local and national businesses. Bethel Homes and Services donated computers they were no longer using, but because of health-care privacy regulations, the hard drives had to be removed.

California-based Western Digital donated refurbished hard drives and Venture Technologies, another local company, donated time and talent to teach the boys how to build a hard drive with new software and then copy it. They cleaned all of the computers before installing the new hardware. “The boys were wonderful, lugging everything into the library," said Thornton English teacher Barbara Peist, who coordinated with the Feldmans. "They even offered to set up the computers but we are awaiting board approval to purchase new computer tables.” The Feldmans have additional PC hard drives and are hoping that more people will donate computers that they no longer use. Just as the boys did with the initial batch, they would leave the old hard drive with the owner and build a new computer. Anyone with a donation or questions can email Feldmand3@gmail.com.
