YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Students rang in the start of the new school year with a little bit of Frisbee fun recently at the Walden School in Yorktown.

The Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES school received a visit from "The Frisbee Guy" Gary Auerbach, according to a release from the school district. Auerbach showed off some tricks to the students and made a Frisbee shot into the basketball hoop from across the gymnasium, but the students learned about more than tricks, school officials said in the release.

“There are all kinds of Frisbees, but they all work basically the same way,” said Auerbach, a former Freestyle Frisbee World Champion, in the release.

The "message of 'different yet the same,' resonated throughout his presentation to the students," school officials said in the release.

Students broke into smaller groups to try out some of Auerbach’s techniques, but also "to talk about ways they are all unique, yet have many things in common," officials said in the release.

“The intent of the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) is to make sure all students feel safe and welcome in public schools,” said Mike Sowul, Walden School principal, in the release. “If we are to embrace the spirit of the Dignity Act, we need to create a school culture that welcomes all students and celebrates diversity. This ‘kick off’ activity is designed for student and staff enjoyment and to deliver this important message in a creative and celebratory manner.”
