Yorktown High School Hosts Information Session About Prom, Graduation

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- The Alliance for Safe Kids, Inc. (ASK), YHS Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and Yorktown High School will present “What Every Parent and Student Should Know About Prom and Graduation Season,” on Thursday, March 13  from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the YHS High School Auditorium.

This panel discussion will focus on health and legal consequences of underage drinking, drug use and decision making.  Its purpose is to share current information, facilitate conversations and help students make healthy decisions.  The event is mandatory for seniors attending prom, and each is required to bring a parent.

Moderated by Ellen Morehouse, executive director of the Student Assistance Services Corp., the panel includes:  Lisa Geller, MD, emergency department physician, Northern Westchester Hospital; Barbara Monohan, chairperson of the Westchester County Taxi and Limousine Commission, Paul S. Scharf, assistant district attorney; chief, Westchester County Criminal Courts and Grand Jury Division; Brian Shanahan, detective in the Yorktown Police Department and a representative of the Westchester County TLC Enforcement Unit.

"Too often parents and teens make unhealthy decisions because of a lack of information," Morehouse said. "I applaud the Yorktown administration, ASK, and the PTA for doing everything possible to make sure this doesn't happen in Yorktown."

YHS principal Joseph DeGennaro stated, “We are at the forefront of this type of proactive presentation because we care about the health and safety of our students, want to further strengthen the collaborative partnership between the high school and our families and because our community has been devastated by substance abuse tragedies."

Tricy Cushner, president of the Alliance for Safe Kids, Inc. added, "This panel reminds parents to have many conversations between now and the prom and to be very clear with their expectations about underage drinking and drugs."For talking tips, please visit www.allianceforsafekids.org."
