Reda received a medal and certificate at the Yorktown Board of Education meeting on Monday, Oct. 20, when he was honored as a BOCES Student of Distinction. For the past two years, Reda has been a student in BOCES’ Tech Center’s Food Preparation program, which is designed for studdents with special needs. He said his favorite tasks at the Tech Center are preparing chicken dishes and onion rings.
“It’s challenging, even small things will require tremendous effort, courage, perseverance and strength," said Walden Principal Mike Sowul. "Anthony, in his quiet and determined way, embodies my definition of student success and I’d like to congratulate him for being recognized as a student of distinction.”
“Anthony is cooperative and respectful and has become more independent," Jessica Yantos, Reda’s teacher at the Tech Center. “He has made gains socially as well. He is initiating more conversations with both peers and adults and has developed an awareness of how his behavior affects others. Although certain tasks can be challenging for Anthony, he tries his best and has made gains.”
Anthony’s parents, Lina and Sal Reda, were in attendance at Monday’s meeting to see their son honored for doing something he loves to do.
“We’re proud of Anthony’s engagement level and interest level,” Sal Reda said. “Every time he starts a new project in Tech he’s always quick to come home and report on it. It’s nice to see that excitement level. We appreciate the school and all of its efforts.”
“We’ve tasted many of the things he has made and he’s come a long way,” added Anthony’s mother, Lina Reda. “He’s really made a lot of accomplishments. I’m hoping he will be able to follow through with a career from here.”
